Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop on Accordion Pleats, Fishtail Braids and the Peplum Predicament

Trend report: menswear outfits, pastelsJason LaVeris/Filmmagic; Jennifer Graylock/INF; Fr

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we saw a spring-friendly skirt silhouette, the return of a very pretty plait hairstyle and one popular clothing accent that seems to have lost it’s sizzle.

Up: Accordion Pleats. Last September, as design houses like Alexander Wang, Céline and Proenza Schouler sent pleated dress after pleated skirt down the Spring/Summer runways, we excitedly awaited their arrival in the real world. Well, that moment is finally here. And it’s a very specific kind of folding that seems to be resonating among celebs: Dianna Agron (left) wears a Miu Miu dress featuring accordion (or knife) pleats, and other actresses including Amanda Peet and Sasha Pieterse are following her lead. Expect to see a whole lot of non-flat-front minis, midis and maxis and perhaps even a few pleated culottes this spring.

Up: Fishtail Braids. Ice cream, flip-flops and beachy plaits. Once you start spotting those things, you know warm weather is here (or at least right around the corner). After a winter in hibernation, the do is being welcomed back by Lucy Hale (center) and Jennifer Lopez, who both show off side-swept, sexily undone versions. Considering there’s a direct correlation between the fishtail and rising temps (it’s a scientific fact), this hairstyle is only going to get more and more prevalent on the red carpet … and in your Instagram feed.

Down: Peplums. Amidst the sea of crop tops that have taken over Hollywood, there was just one star doing the waist-ruffle thing this past week. And frankly, we’d almost forgotten about the once-ultra-popular trend until we saw Ashley Benson (right) wearing a peplum Alberta Ferretti dress. While we fully predict that this look will come back in the fall, you know it’s gonna be all about shrunken tops and cutouts for the next few months.

Jennifer Lopez's '80s Hair on American Idol: Let the Beauty Debate Begin

Jennifer Lopez‘s style and beauty parade on American Idol is just as captivating as the contestants’ performances. Okay, we exaggerate, but the superstar judge has been knocking it out of the park recently. Wednesday’s Top 8 show was dedicated to the ’80s, and Lopez totally went for the theme. (As did Keith Urban and his mullet). But her kinky side-swept voluminous tresses and bold shadow have editors at odds. Since hair, like love, is a battlefield, we had to debate the look below.

PRO: Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: I’ve started to tune into American Idol every week, just so I can talk about how flawless Jennifer Lopez is. I sit on the couch and admire her complexion, hair, clothes etc. And without fail I turn to my fiancé (who at this point thinks I’m totally insane) and say, “Seriously, how pretty is she?” He nods, before asking me if we can change the channel. True to form last night, I stared slack-jawed at J.Lo, crazy ’80s hair and all. Not only did her edgy voluminous do perfectly match her gold spotted Jill Stuart dress (which featured a leather harness!), but it also was a fun departure from her loose waves. Plus, anything throwback is totally in now, right?

RELATED: American Idol‘s Top 8 Go ’80s — See the recap!

CON: Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: Yeah, first of all, I don’t believe Jennifer Lopez looked like this in the ’80s. I think she was wearing actual curls, a lot more neon, and a bunch of rubber bracelets. So I reject this throwback on principle, but I also reject it on execution. There’s a fun way to do a wink at a decade that isn’t quite so … aggressive. I feel tired from being visually assaulted by the heavy eyeshadow and the hair. And as any good sorority girl (or Mean Girl) knows, if your costume masks your essential hotness, it, as a costume, has failed.

Rihanna's iHeart Radio Awards Outfit and Green Lips: You Didn't Think We Forgot, Did You?

Rihanna‘s closet contains a wide variety of looks. For example, her mint crop top ensemble landed a spot in our Love Her Outfit gallery this week. But the singer proves she’s the queen of pulling a style 180° at any given moment (and literally isn’t afraid to wear anything), attending the iHeart Radio Music Awards in L.A. Thursday in a sheer couture Givenchy design (below) that had our heads spinning.

And it’s not just the underwear-revealing, diaphanous fabric that surprised us. (That’s old hat in Hollywood by now — and skin-baring is RiRi’s middle name.) We’re more interested in how the singer styled her look: layers of necklaces, hoops that are big enough to double as chokers, green metallic lipstick and bantu knots (which are giving us flashbacks to Gwen Stefani circa 1995). She topped off the ’90s goth vibe to with an edgy moto jacket.

And while we’re on the subject of iHeart Radio fashions, we thought we’d have you weigh in on a debate that’s happening in the PEOPLE StyleWatch offices right now. Jennifer Lopez wore two LWDs last night — a lace-up, second-skin Michael Kors mini for the results show on American Idol followed by an allover beaded backless Zuhair Murad dress for her appearance at the iHeart Radio Awards. So study the photo below, admire her toned legs and then vote in our poll.

What's Jennifer Lopez's One Style Pitfall of Working at American Idol?

Jennifer Lopez is known for her stunning fashion choices, but she not only strives to look great, she wants to smell fantastic as well.

“Scents, for me, create memories in my mind so fragrance has always been a big part of that,” the American Idol judge tells PEOPLE.

And Lopez, 44, makes sure she has a large hand in the fragrances she wears, because she designs them herself.

“Sometimes I will just be inspired, and I’ll say ‘Put a pin in this. I love the smell of this candle right here,’” she says. “And then from there we will build on different things just so it is fresh and new. I’m always thinking about it.”

And it seems that others want to smell like Lopez as well. The international superstar recently released “Glowing Goddess,” her 21st fragrance since hitting the market with “Glow” in 2002.

“The first one was easier in a way. Glow was just about being out there. I was just starting my career in this arena and it was a different feeling,” she says. “Now I am more grown up and I want to feel a certain way. I always just try to be honest to how I am feeling at the moment.”

The fashonista also has the same outlook when it comes to choosing her outfits with her style team of Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn.

“We just go with how we feel that day. I’ll try anything,” Lopez says of choosing her outfits for the American Idol live shows. “But a lot of the looks are really short, and we sit above the audience so I have to be careful!”

Jennifer Lopez Recreates That Versace Grammys Dress (And Proves She Can Still Perform in a Leather Garter)

We have an ongoing theory in the PEOPLE StyleWatch office that Jennifer Lopez doesn’t age. And now we have some photographic evidence to support that theory. The singer wore a version of her famous super-sheer, super-plunging Versace gown (lest Rihanna forget that J.Lo did it first!) from the 2000 Grammy Awards at her concert Wednesday night in the Bronx, N.Y. And it’s nearly impossible to tell that 14 years have passed.

Lopez covered up a little more this time around, pairing the diaphanous tropical-print design with a bodysuit and nude fishnets for her hometown concert. And of course she had a few outfit changes, including a bedazzled nude bodysuit teamed with a not-safe-for-work leather garter belt and sheer stockings combo, just in case you forgot how amazing her body is.

Think the 44-year-old superstar will be hitting the stage in anything less skimpy anytime soon? Don’t count on it — she has a very positive outlook on aging.

“I feel like I felt when I was 28,” Lopez told InStyle. “My bones don’t hurt. I feel great. I actually feel better, more confident. Of course I still have the nerves, but now I know how to control them. When I was in my twenties, I wasn’t sure of myself. Now I can really stretch. I don’t have to stay in the box. At this point I can say to myself, ‘So what if I fall, so what?’ I’m going to get back up.”

It’s time to hit pause on this video of Jennifer Lopez twerking, just for a minute, so we can talk about how amazing she looks without makeup.

Jennifer Lopez Without MakeupCourtesy Jennifer Lopez

It’s rare to see the star completely barefaced, as she’s always performing or hitting the red carpet in some head-turning look. But as it turns out, her skin is just as glowing without her major makeup routine as it is in full diva mode. “No makeup day! #realface #trueselfie #iwokeuplikethis,” she captioned the above photo on Instagram Sunday, as she lounged poolside and enjoyed her day off.

The newly single star has been busy traveling the globe promoting her new album, A.K.A., followed by an energetic performance at the World Cup in Brazil. Of course, a day off of work doesn’t mean a day off from style when you’re Jennifer Lopez: She snapped a pic of herself wearing a Pucci bikini and matching Gucci avaitors. “By the pool. One day off. #dayofrest #sundayfunday #pucci&gucci #muchneeded,” she wrote.

Juicy Couture announced last week the closure of all U.S. locations by the end of June. (Is anyone else’s teenage self shedding a small tear?) The brand is most popularly known for the bedazzled terry-cloth tracksuits which launched to superstardom in the early aughts thanks to celebs like Paris Hilton, Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian. It seems like it was only yesterday that we were watching The Simple Life and secretly wanting our own pair of sweatpants with a rhinestone-encrusted message across the butt (to wear with our UGG boots, of course).

While having nostalgic flashbacks to our middle-school days, we turned to Twitter to see what others were saying about the end of the Juicy era. Check out a roundup of our favorite reaction Tweets below, and then tell us how you’re feeling about the news in the comments.

Jennifer Lopez Has Been Looking Fabulous Lately - and Her Makeup Artist Shares Her Secrets

With Jennifer Lopez‘s promotional tour for her eight studio album, “A.K.A.”, in full swing, we’ve seen the singer kill it on stage from the Bronx to Brazil. And while the 44-year-old mom of twins has been giving other, younger pop stars a run for their money in the skintight performance leotard department, we can’t help but notice the star’s smoking hot makeup, too. And since we’re really into trying to keep up with her workout, (we’ll stick to the cookie diet, thanks), we decided to give her longtime makeup artist Mary Phillips a call to get the scoop on our favorite concert and red carpet looks this summer.

Jennifer Lopez makeupSplash News Online;Invision/AP;Getty

As Lopez proved in her recent makeup-free selfie, she’s stunning without a stitch of paint, but when she wants show-stopping makeup, she’s relied on Phillips since 2006. So of course, for her Good Morning America appearance on June 20, Phillips was behind the look. The makeup pro says her performance go-to is “a little more powder, which we tend to use sparingly in other circumstances. And, accentuating Jennifer’s eyes is a must. She’s very physical in her performances — it’s best to stick with eyes [and skip] glossy lip colors.”

RELATED PHOTOS: The eight best face washes — ever!

Given that an intense concert could cause bolder makeup to look busted after a twerk or two, it’s probably good that Lopez is currently favoring a nude palette. “I think it’s safe to say that nudes are her anchor, and it’s how I think people envision her,” says Phillips, adding that the two carefully choose tones “so nothing ever falls flat. They all enhance her, yet nothing’s overpowering.”

While Phillips has Lopez’s stage makeup down to a science, the two go with the flow when it comes to creating looks for appearances and events. When Lopez channeled her inner Fly Girl in a graphic print mini, gold hoops and a laid-back pony for her June 18 appearance at BET, Phillips let the time of day dictate the bronzed, casual makeup. “I feel like this makeup perfectly complements her ensemble and hair,” Phillips said. “She looks gorgeous and cool, with complete ease and that’s just sexy in general!”

Later that day the duo built on the natural BET look to create an iconic J.Lo moment for her visit to Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live. “There were lots of ’60s undertones, which we love,” explains Phillips, who paired classic “Brigitte Bardot liner” with “a hint of purple on her eyes. It was a great way to throw a dash of spice into something if you’re wearing black with your hair pulled up.” Phillips completed the look with a creamy nude lip. “From the skin to the eyes and lips, this was quintessential J.Lo!”

Phillips says the secret to their success is communication. “We are really a team,” she says of the glam squad. “Everyone’s able to share what’s inspiring them. Jennifer always has amazing references, we could have 50 and she’ll somehow have more. She’s a professional in every sense, and for us that’s extremely inspiring.” And even though Lopez is loving a nude palette right now, “Jennifer’s really open to things. Although [a neutral] color scheme might be our base, we like to change it up when you least expect it!”

Which look do you love most?

Jennifer Lopez's Pants/Dress Combo Platter Inspires an Editor Debate: 'Obsessed or Hot Mess?'

$

Jennifer Lopez is never one to play it safe on the style front — and this latest look, an Atelier Versace high-fashion jumpsuit-slash-dress, is just another notch on her risk-taker belt. And much like any fashion-forward ensemble, it inspired a debate in the PEOPLE StyleWatch offices. Below, we take sides; read on, then tell us where you fall on the great jumpsuit/dress pro/con spectrum.

Jennifer Lopez pants/dress hybridDominique Charriau/WireImage

OBSESSED: Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: I have been experiencing jumpsuit fatigue lately. I love the trend, and I have a few onesies hanging in my closet, but it’s becoming a little stale on the red carpet. So when Jennifer Lopez introduced this gown-meets-pants Versace creation at the label’s Paris show, I got very excited. In my opinion, it’s like the jumpsuit’s sassy older sister. Plus, it fit her body impeccably and gave me flashbacks to old-school JLo. To be clear, I don’t think this look would work for just any formal occasion (and if Forever 21 or H&M comes out with a look-for-less version, I’m not sure that I’d be brave enough to wear it), but it was a very refreshing outfit compared to the other expected gowns or minis that we usually see on the carpet. And it has two editors involved in a really fun fashion debate, which I think was the whole point.

RELATED PHOTOS: Vote on more “Obsessed or Hot Mess” candidates right now!

HOT MESS: Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: I can’t be “over” jumpsuits because I was never “under” jumpsuits (yes, Friends jokes, still as fresh today as they were 15 years ago). But I can grudgingly admit that in certain circumstances, on certain stars, they can look as fun or elegant as a dress. I haven’t, however, ever felt the need to see a jumpsuit combined with a dress. But Jenny from the Block has been answering questions I haven’t asked since way back in 1999, and this Atelier Versace look is no different. “What would a high-slit gown look like with one sparkly rogue trouser look like?” I never wondered, and here’s the result. Listen, I’ll give J.Lo points for choosing a risky outfit — but then I’m going to take all those points away for her “bronzer by exhaust pipe” makeup job.

With whom do you agree? Can this outfit be saved — or is it perfect as is?

Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop on Bra-Baring Tops, Metallic Silver and the Updo That's Not ... Quite ... There

$

sheer tops, metallic silverSplash News Online; WireImage (2)

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we saw ladies daring to bare, a few metallic moments and a hairstyle that’s better left at the gym than worn on a red carpet.

Up: Bra-Baring Tops. It seems we have done a total 180° from last week’s only-kinda crop tops. This week’s trend is all about showing skin, with leading ladies baring their (sorry, but we really can’t resist this) over-the-shoulder-boulder-holders. Keri Russell (left) proved that you don’t need a glamorous dress to make a statement with her textured sheer tank revealing black undergarments at her Dawn of the Planet of the Apes premiere. Nina Dobrev also showed off her bra with a see-through top paired with a dusty-rose maxi skirt (both Elie Saab) while attending the designer’s Fall 2014 Couture show. The underwear-baring trend has been around for some time now and we don’t expect to see it fading (as long as Kim Kardashian is on the scene, anyway).

Up: Metallic Silver. Looking for a little extra oomph in the wardrobe department? This latest trend might be just what you need. Chloë Moretz (center) stood out amongst the crowd donning a head-to-toe chrome ensemble at Paris Fashion Week. Also attending the same show, Pink rivaled Chloë’s outfit with a dress featuring a highly-embellished silvery top. But nothing divided the StyleWatch office more than the gleam coming off of J.Lo’s Atelier Versace pants/dress creation (and PEOPLE readers are split as well)!

Down: Off-Center Topknots. No, Kate Hudson (right) didn’t give her hairstylist the day off — that’s the real Leaning Tower of Topknot on the red carpet. Though a high topknot is a favorite among many stars, this messy, off-center version looks ready to topple — and the loose tendrils accentuate the “fresh from Pilates” vibe. An undone updo is one thing, but we don’t expect this “my dress cost $10K and my hair took fifteen seconds” look to catch on in Hollywood.

Which of these trends will you try? Which will you skip? Tell us in the comments!

Piper Perabo's Wedding Dress Is Michael Kors - and It's Also a Truly Awesome Fashion Faceoff With Jennifer Lopez

Piper Perabo’s wedding dress is a huge topic of conversation in the PEOPLE office. Yes, it’s a very unique bridal choice. No, we’ve never seen a veil that shade before. But that isn’t what has style editors buzzing. We knew the dress looked familiar, and we finally pin-pointed why. It’s the same striking style Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2013 Met Gala.

Perabo’s silver sequin animal print gown is a twin to the black-and-nude Michael Kors second-skin stunner JLo wore to the Punk-themed fashion fête. Though we don’t have a back view to compare to Lopez’s (it’s a large keyhole cutout), it appears to be the same design, just in a different, more bridal metallic hue for her NYC wedding to director-producer Stephen Kay on July 26. And to add to the faceoff fun, supermodel Naomi Campbell selected the gown in the silver hue, making it a triple star style showdown.

Jennifer Lopez Rocks Her Curls, Demi Lovato Goes Even Shorter & More Celeb Hair Updates

It wouldn’t be a real Monday without a weekend hair roundup — and we’re not going to disappoint you today. Below, check out everything from a rare look at Jennifer Lopez’s curly texture to the most natural Lady Gaga’s hair has ever looked.

Jennifer Lopez curly hairJohnny Nunez/WireImage; Courtesy Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez is rarely seen without her perfectly blown-out, voluminous long waves (or, when she’s out and about, a high topknot). But she gave fans a glimpse of what her day-off locks look like with this low-key snap from her private jet. (Okay, not that low-key). “Wheels up!! Next stop LA… #curlyhairdontcare #myNYlook #gonnamissNY #greatvacation #backtowork” Lopez captioned the Instagram photo. We’d like to note that though her hair reflects a more off-duty J.Lo than we’ve ever seen before, her flawless skin and glossy pink lip are exactly the same as they are whether she’s on or off the red carpet.

Instagram Photo

Another week, another Demi Lovato hair change. The star first went purple and silver, then ditched the silver in a shoulder-length mullet-adjacent cut, and she finally wound up with an even more layered “lob” thanks to stylist Riawna Capri. “Just went shorter!!!! 😝😝😝😝😝 only the best from @RiawnaCapri at @NineZeroOne 💇💗💗💗” Lovato wrote about her new do. We weren’t quite clear on how it differed from her old cut, so Capri clarified on Instagram: “It consist of being shorter on one side and about 3 inches longer on the other with tons of piecey disconnected texture instead of layers, and of course half shaved 😉 Utilizing as much natural curl as possible, tons of #beachspray and a little #expandadust and you got a haircut of a rockstar!”

Speaking of minor (but noteworthy) hair changes: Bella Thorne lightened up her signature fiery red hue with a blonde wash, which she showed off in a Miu Miu dress and Edie Parker clutch at the Young Hollywood awards. She didn’t address her color change on the red carpet, but she did tell PEOPLE she’s undergone a body transformation recently, thanks to her amped-up workout regimen. “I’m definitely bigger. It’s cool with me,” she said. “I like being in shape and fit and that’s all very healthy so it’s pretty good especially since what I eat is so unhealthy.”

Instagram Photo

Despite mixed fan reactions to her blonde pixie, Jessica Seinfeld has doubled down on the look and gone even blonder. She was a true platinum at her Baby Buggy event at her home in New York’s Hamptons. And if you’re not loving this blonder look either? Seinfeld likely doesn’t care. “Everyone is asking me why — and basically, ‘Why not?'” she told PEOPLE when she first lightened up. “I just have no attachments (to things) so I don’t care. If I hate my hair, it will grow.”

Instagram Photo

Finally, Lady Gaga has been rocking darker locks for a while now, but with that wacky songstress, you never know if any of her looks are going to last. However, she appears to really be committing to the new, dark chocolate hue, wearing it in an understated bun to duet with Tony Bennett — and it appears to be all her own hair, no wigs or extensions. Could Gaga be turning over a new leaf? It remains to be seen.

Whose hair change is your fave? Tell us below!

Disclaimer: I’m staring at you, I’m looking for cellulite and looking for things that my mind could compute and she’s like ‘Well, just look and try to find it.'”

When a red carpet swings from sedate and sophisticated to whatever this is, as the VMAs does, it’s hard to predict any trends. One thing we can almost always guarantee, however, is daringly bare outfits — it’s just a matter of how stars will show off their killer bods. And in 2014, the skin delivery method of choice was via sky-high slits.

From left, above, check out Katy Perry‘s leggy tribute to Britney Spears (courtesy Versace), Jennifer Lopez‘s super-risky silver number (one false move on the dance floor and that’s suddenly a cape, Rita Ora’s blazing-hot (and daringly bare) Donna Karan Atelier silk charmeuse gown, Kylie Jenner’s black boudoir robe-style dress and Demi Lovato‘s red-hot draped and plunging look.

Showing off your assets is an easy way to get people talking at the VMAs, so the question is, who got you talking the most?

Stars brought out some truly head-turning style at Tuesday’s Fashion Rocks concert. And by head-turning, of course, we mean skin-baring. Below, three star outfit switch-ups, from red carpet to stage, that we need to talk about.

Miranda Lambert chose a suit for her big entrance, adding a little flare via a bedazzled bra underneath. For her stage appearance she chose gold metallic booties and a red romper with a sexy cutout to show off her slimmed-down figure.

Jennifer Lopez, 45, continues to choose sexy one-legged looks (selecting a black cutout Atelier Versace gown with metallic detailing at the neckline for her entrance) and defy gravity (see: the metallic mini, also Atelier Versace, which gave an appropriately impressive view of her behind during performance of “Booty”).

Nicki Minaj also battled for the “Biggest Skin-Barer” of the night crown, first hitting the carpet in a tuxedo-inpsired Saint Laurent dress (no bra or top underneath, of course) and studded Giuseppe Zanotti booties. For her butt-shaking performance of “Anaconda,” she selected a denim crystal-encrusted bra top with a matching mini skirt and white wedge sneakers.

It’s time for our annual Best Dressed of 2014 reveal and the list definitely caused a few heated debates among editors. But in the end, we all agreed that these 11 ladies (yes, there was a tie this year!) nailed it when it came to their red carpet style. And we have a ton of photos to prove it. So who nabbed the top spot?

She also happens to be a street style queen, who recently released a smash hit that we can’t get out of our heads no matter how hard we try. If you guessed Taylor Swift, you’re right. Swift leads a pack of super-stylish ladies this year. You’re going to want to pick up the new issue of PEOPLE (on stands everywhere Friday) for a whole rundown of why she took the top spot, but for now, let’s also look at the rest of the ladies.

Of course, the World’s Most Beautiful Woman Lupita Nyong’o is featured, thanks to her amazing red carpet reign this award season — that “Nairobi” blue Oscars dress alone still has us daydreaming. And for the first time, we had a very special teen tie between Kiernan Shipka, 14, and Chloë Grace Moretz, 17, whose style we will be watching evolve for a very long time.

Jennifer Lopez's Matchy-Matchy Blue Snakeprint Look: We Debate!

Remember when we said there were some debates happening when we put together our Best Dressed issue? Well another one of those debates is happening right now over one of the ladies on the list: Jennifer Lopez. The one thing the whole staff can agree on? She’s fearless when it comes to her style. Okay, and one more thing — she definitely doesn’t look 45. But two editors have very differing views on one of her latest look: a blue leather DSquared2 snakeskin mini dress, worn with matching heels, purse and even blue eyeshadow to the American Idol XIV photo call in N.Y.C. Read the battling sides below.

LOVE IT! Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: In my opinion, J.Lo can do no wrong, and I love that she takes risks. The matchy-matchy thing is on trend right now, and legs like hers deserve to be shown off all the time. (Hey, she works hard for them!) Also, because the dress is a slouchy silhouette and not skin-tight, the micro-mini hemline doesn’t bother me.

LEAVE IT! Alex Apatoff, Senior Style Editor: I call dresses like this “Subway Nightmare Dresses,” because there’s no way you’re going to sit down on a public seat in them. And Lopez’s dress may actually be so short that she can’t sit down, period, in it. Yes, the lady’s got legs for days, but even the best stems are better served by a mini that’s short and sweet, not gynecologically dangerous. I might have overlooked the dangerous length if she’d paired it with a cool clutch and a flat metallic sandal, but the repetitive print took this from “fun fashion risk” to “oh no, J.Lo.”
