Jennifer Lopez’s Nail Artist Tells Us What’s Hot (& What’s Not) for Summer

Zoya NailpolishCourtesy Zoya; Inset: Ethan Miller/Getty

Nail art is huge beauty trend for summer, so we asked the lady who paints Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry and Rihanna‘s famous talons — Kimmie Kyees — to tell us what’s hot and what’s totally over in the nail world.

HOT: Zoya’s Fleck Effect topcoat“It’s so rad,” Kyees tells PEOPLE. “I did it on Jennifer Lopez for the American Idol finale. We put the pinkish one called ‘Chloe’ (above, left) on top of the original polish to match her dress. It gave it this holographic effect — the pictures don’t do it justice.” Kyees recommends layering the glaze on top of any color to add a fun finishing touch.

NOT: Shatter polishes: The L.A.-based nail artist jokes that she’d be happy to never see this trend again, mostly because she used it on Rihanna for the first time forever ago. “I did it when she opened the VMAs years ago — so long ago — in hot pink and black,” she explains. “It was before all of the brands started selling it, so I just got this crappy Chinese stuff you bought downtown. At the time it looked amazing, but it’s nothing new anymore.” Noted.

Tell us: Do you love over-the-top nail art designs or do you stick with the classic shades?

New season, new ‘do! Just in time for summer, Jennifer Lopez debuted a new hair color this week while in Santiago, Chile. The singer was snapped while out with beau Casper Smart on Monday, sporting a short, curly hairstyle (and an $84 moto jacket from her Kohl’s collection).

Lopez — currently on tour in Chile, Argentina and Brazil before coming to North America in July — has been working natural waves lately, a sexy contrast from her normally smooth, blown-out style. Is it her beau — or maybe the humidity? — that’s making her try something new? Tell us: Do you like Lopez’s new look?

She designed the dress … but did she wear it best? Victoria Beckham donned a sleek orange frock of her own design Monday while out in London with husband David. The star — reportedly at a party for mogul pal Simon Fuller — finished her ensemble with neutral peep-toes, a matching clutch and a simple ponytail.

Rewind a few months, when Jennifer Lopez wore the same dress for a May episode of American Idol. The singer decided to accessorize differently, though, choosing metallic-accented shoes and jewels — plus loose waves — to complete the look.

The flattering frock is popular: Beth Ostrosky Stern also wore it — with neutral sandals and some shimmering bangles — during an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in June. The dress was presented during Beckham’s well-received spring 2012 runway show at New York Fashion Week last fall, and features a bit of an open back, adding extra sexiness to the look. So, who wears it best? Vote in our poll below!

What it Takes to Look Like J.Lo: 8,000 Crystals

Jennifer Lopez Tour CostumesKevin Mazur/WireImage(4)

While some of Jennifer Lopez‘s ensembles can be easily emulated, these are four outfits we definitely won’t be including in our Looks for Less gallery.

The singer’s head-turning crystal-embellished creation made its official Americas debut this weekend when she kicked off her North American tour in Montreal. The jumpsuit (first), topped off with a sky-high white fur headpiece (is it making anyone else think of the Buckingham Palace guards?) and a hand-embroidered feather skirt, was just one of the many Zuhair Murad Couture creations she’s rocking on stage. (If that name sounds familiar, it’s probably because Lopez has worn his designs before, including at the Oscars two years in a row.)

“My utmost wish is for each costume to create a ‘Wow!’ effect the moment she steps on stage,” Murad told PEOPLE in June when he released sketches of the getups. Mission accomplished, Mr. Murad. Each garment he made for Lopez features more than 2,000 hand-sewn crystals — that’s more 8,000 sparkles in total!

Lopez also hit the stage in a bright blue fringed corset mini (second), followed by yet another nude sequined one-piece (third). Not surprisingly, the former American Idol judge pulled out all the stops for her final ensemble, flaunting her famous curves in a nude-illusion black leotard with fringe detail (fourth).

Well, it’s official: we’d go see Lopez in concert just to check out her costumes. Tell us: Which one of Lopez’s stage looks is your favorite?

Jennifer Lopez Video

Now this is some serious lip shine. Jennifer Lopez works a few extra-special rocks in the opening shots of her latest video, for her new single “Goin’ In.”

According to a rep for Swarovski, the company that provided the gems, each crystal was individually glued onto Lopez’s lips by her makeup artist, Mary Phillips. (Katy Perry pulled a similar stunt for a Harper’s Bazaar cover in 2010.)

The jewels aren’t the only sparkle in the high-energy video, though; Lopez writhes around in some glimmering, skin-tight pants and flaunts her famous moves (and rock-hard abs) in silver Hammer pants. There’s also a sexy metallic jacket paired with a simple white leotard. It’s definitely Jenny at her fiercest. Check it out below:

Jennifer Lopez: I Went to Modeling School

Jennifer LopezCourtesy InStyle

In the September issue of InStyle, Jennifer Lopez takes questions from fans. And when responding to one inquiry about taking good photographs, she gives a surprising answer.

“When I was maybe 15 or 16, I took a class at a modeling agency,” she reveals. “But mostly I think my ability [to photograph well] is innate. And it’s funny because I see that my daughter, Emme, has it too — that something special. She knows how to play for the camera.”

We learn a few more of Lopez’s style secrets in the spread: she has a pair of Gucci boyfriend jeans that “are full of holes,” but she’ll never throw them out; she only washes her hair “every few days” to keep it from getting “overworked”; and she uses moisturizer “every morning and every night.”

The superstar touches on her love of jewelry, too; recalling her first shiny gift — a cross she received for her First Communion — she says bling has “always been a part of my style. For me, jewelry will always be a big deal.” For more with Lopez, pick up the September issue of InStyle, on newsstands Friday, Aug. 17.

Jennifer Lopez Is Returning to Her Style Roots — and We Kind of Love It

Jennifer LopezWireImage; Startraks

Jennifer Lopez seems to be aging in reverse à la Benjamin Button, and we’re not just talking about her flawless skin and six-pack abs.

The superstar stepped out in two looks that gave us a major case of style déjà vu while in Las Vegas this weekend, first for a pre-concert pool party at the MGM Grand’s Wet Republic and later, for a post-performance bash at Pure Nightclub inside Caesars Palace.

Lopez’s all-white pool party ensemble (right) — consisting of a Bec &Bridge crop top and shorts, plus peep-toe heels and matching bag — conjured up memories of her infamous 2000 MTV VMAs ensemble (left), minus the bedazzled Sean John logo and bandana, of course.

The singer’s nighttime look, a blue Edition by Georges Chakra strapless crepe dress with white accents, was set off by a high, curly half-pony — a wavier variation on the same style she tried at the 2000 ALMA Awards.

If anyone can reference looks from back in the day and make them even better, it’s Lopez; the woman is ageless, her body is insane and she knows what works on her figure. So will we see more ’90s-inspired looks in the days ahead? Time will tell.

Jennifer Lopez Takes Paris Fashion Week By Storm

Jennifer Lopez took a break from the nude bodysuits she’s been wearing on her world tour to slip into something a little more comfortable: three designer dresses, which she donned to take in Paris Fashion Week. Oh, and did we mention that the superstar cycled through all three in less than 24 hours?

“Quick day hop to Paris!! Fashion week fun!” Lopez Tweeted on Monday before making her first appearance in the City of Light, at a dinner hosted by Anna Wintour. She stunned in a red cap-sleeve Hakaan dress with a thigh-baring slit and ankle-strap heels each adorned with a lock and key. She finished off the look with voluminous, ’90s-inspired waves and a red pout.

Then, just a few hours later on Tuesday morning, the singer sat front row at Chanel (and we’re guessing she didn’t just attend the show, but she also stole the show) in a plunging white mini, presumably by the label. She accessorized the sexy little number with a quilted black bag and the same black heels from the night before. But her best accessory during Karl Lagerfeld’s presentation? Her 4-year-old daughter, Emme, who sat front row with mom. (OK, Casper Smart’s a pretty good accessory too.)

Soon after, the quick-change artist swapped white for pink. She wore a pink long-sleeve, bow-accented flouncy number paired with a studded black clutch and silver heels, all by Valentino, for — you guessed it — the Valentino show.

Tell us: Which one of Lopez’s Paris Fashion Week outfits is your favorite? And what do you think of those lock-and-key shoes?!

Sexy Shoe Spotlight: Tom Ford Padlock Pumps

After several seasons of celebs wearing what seemed like nothing but massive platform pumps, we’re happy to see some fashion-forward stars switching to single-sole heels. And the latest must-have style is the Tom Ford Padlock.

Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian both recently stepped out in the pointy-toe design, which retails for a cool $1,100 and features a golden lock-and-key charm hanging from the ankle strap as well as a golden-covered heel.

Lopez wore the shoes in black twice during Paris Fashion Week: First paired with a red cap-sleeve Hakaan dress at a dinner, then with a white lace mini to the Chanel show.

Kardashian took a more casual approach by teaming the white version with a blue pencil skirt and chambray shirt while out in Miami.

We’re pretty pleased about the return of the single-sole shoe. The sleek shape makes legs appear longer and leaner, plus it’s far more chic than a clunky sky-high platform. The only downside? The style is tougher to walk in since there is less foot support. But you know what they say: the most uncomfortable heels tend to be the sexiest. Tell us: Are you ready to say goodbye to platforms and try single-sole heels instead? Sound off below!

Shania Twain kicked off her Las Vegas residency over the weekend, taking the stage at Caesars Palace in a shimmering skintight Marc Bouwer bodysuit.

“The show is very fun for me,” Twain, 47, told reporters. “I was a bit worried that we were staying in the same place. Was I going to lose that edge? But I’ve never had a show this exciting before.”

Her glimmering look called to mind the Zuhair Murad bodysuit Jennifer Lopez, 43, wore while touring the world this summer. “My utmost wish is for each costume to create a ‘Wow!’ effect the moment she steps on stage,” Murad told PEOPLE at the time. “Jennifer has a beautiful body and wears each look perfectly.”

Yes, we know, there are likely rigorous workouts, serious shapewear, personal chefs and good genes involved in looking this hot in a bodysuit, but we’re giving major props to these women anyway. May we have bodies that look even half that great when we hit that age!

Where Does Jennifer Lopez Keep that Famous Grammys Dress?

Jennifer Lopez Harper's BazaarCourtesy Harper’s Bazaar

No one will ever forget the plunging Versace dress Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards. But the star herself still hasn’t figured out exactly what to do with the memorable gown.

“I have that at home. The other day, my housekeeper put it on a mannequin in my spa, where I get my hair and makeup done,” Lopez says in the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar. “She sent me a pictures. She was like, ‘You like this dress?’ Um, yeah, but I don’t know if I like it out in the house!”

Fashion problems aside, Lopez also dishes on her fashion tastes, which she realizes have changed over time. The singer says she’s gone from a “boyish, hip-hoppy sensibility: big hoops, sneakers, tank tops, and my big curly hair” to adding a “sexy element” to channeling “movie stars, Jackie O. And now all of these things mixed together, that’s my style.”

But behind that well-dressed façade is a mother who realizes she keeps a crazy schedule — and works to keep her children as happy and grounded as possible when on the road.

“I make [travel] as simple and as beautiful as I can because my life is kind of big,” she shares. “So I pack my luggage, or dress myself, or comb my kids’ hair, pick up their clothes — that makes our life beautiful, you know? There’s something very elegant in that.” For more with Lopez, pick up the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar, on newsstands Jan. 8, or visit harpersbazaar.com/jenniferlopez.

The Lipstick Report: Golden Globes Edition

Red was the color of the night when it came to gowns, but there was hardly a red lip to be seen on any star at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night. Instead, we spotted a sea of pink, plum, fuchsia and nude pouts; here are the 11 ladies whose lip colors we loved and the exact shade they were wearing.

Amy Adams
Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP

Amy Adams: To ensure that her delicate blush Marchesa gown didn’t wash her out, Adams’s makeup artist, Stephen Sollitto, went for a richer lip. He applied Laura Mercier Crème Smooth Lip Colour in Plum Orchid underneath the line’s Lip Glacé in Raspberry for a hint of shine. The results? One pretty pink pout.

Hannah Simone
Matt Baron/BEImages

Hannah Simone: The New Girl actress made a vampy statement with a rich wine-stained pout — just like fellow TV star Kaley Cuoco — achieved with Tom Ford lipstick in Crimson Noir. “I really wanted to create a contrast to her silver dress,” Marina Gravani, celebrity makeup and waxing expert for European Wax Center, tells PEOPLE. “This edgy look is all about a bold lip and full, fierce eyelashes.”

Jessica Alba
Jason Merritt/Getty

Jessica Alba: Alba’s makeup artist Lauren Andersen used the star’s juicy melon Oscar de la Renta dress as inspiration. She chose Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid lipstick in Rivera, a vibrant tangerine hue. “I loved the contrast between her glowing skin and the matte orange lip,” she says.

Zooey Deschanel
John Shearer/Invision/AP

Zooey Deschanel: “We always love to go very ’60s with Zooey’s makeup,” says makeup artist Jorjee Douglas. “We look at Brigitte Bardot and Twiggy for inspiration.” Using all Tarte products, Douglas patted on Glamazon Pure Performance 12-Hour lipstick in Bold with her fingers to create a light stain, followed by LipSurgence Lip Luster in Delighted to add extra shine.

Anne Hathaway
John Shearer/Invision/AP

Anne Hathaway: Forget the expected white gown/red lip combo. “[Her] look was elegant, but still youthful and light. I felt that the makeup should mirror this,” Chanel makeup artist Kate Lee says. She applied the brand’s Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Sedusicante — a pink with a bluish tint — so the best supporting actress winner’s big smile would act as a “focal point.”

Julianne Moore
John Shearer/Invision/AP

Julianne Moore: Makeup artist Elaine Offers added a modern twist to Moore’s ’60-inspired black-and-white Tom Ford gown with a vibrant hot-pink lip. She used L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Caresse lipstick in Velvety Fuchsia to pop against Moore’s porcelain skin.

Jessica Chastain
Jim Ruymen/UPI/Landov

Jessica Chastain: Using L’Oréal Paris Colour Caresse Shine Stain in Berry Persistent, the actress’s makeup artist, Kristofer Buckle, gave the best actress winner a juicy, just-ate-a-popsicle lip look to complete her classic Hollywood makeup.

Jennifer Lopez
Jeff Vespa/WireImage

Jennifer Lopez: One of the few stars not wearing a bright shade, Lopez went bold with her eyes (not to mention that dress!) instead. Mary Philllips kept the star’s lips “very warm and neutral” with L’Oréal Paris Colour Caresse Shine Stain in Eternally Nude.

Rachel Weisz
John Shearer/Invision/AP

Rachel Weisz: Melanie Inglessis gave the star a timeless look with feathery lashes and a cherry pout. Using her ring finger to create a stain-like look, she applied Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro in shade #201, which kept the effect modern and youthful.

Claire Danes
Jason Merritt/Getty

Claire Danes: Prepare to take notes on how Matin Maulawizada achieved this “early ’90s supermodel pout.” First, he defined the best actress winner’s lips with Laura Mercier lip pencil in Hazelnut, then contoured and shaded them with another lip pencil in Praline. He finished with Laura Mercier Crème Smooth Lip Colour in Angelic.

Stacy Keibler
Gilbert Flores/Celebrity

Stacy Keibler: Kathy Jeung planned to create a bold red lip for the star, but she changed her mind last-minute. “After Stacy tried on the dress, we decided to keep the [it] softer,” Jeung explains. “[We kept] it all very fresh [to] accentuate her natural beauty in an elegantly luminous way.” First, Jeung used Victoria Secret’s Pro Pout FX Lip Primer & Definer, then VS Makeup lip liner in Blushing Nude, followed by VS Makeup Color Drama lipstick in Pulse. The finishing touch? VS Makeup Brilliant Lip Shine Extreme in Sunset Strip.

When it comes to most things, Jennifer Lopez will not allow herself to be outdone. Which is why we weren’t at all surprised to see the diva make the rounds in N.Y.C. Tuesday wearing not one, not two, but four distinctly different pieces of outerwear.

For a crack-of-dawn appearance on Good Morning America, she was Classic J.Lo, in an elegant fur-trimmed trench by Diane von Furstenberg. Stepping out of a car midday, she was Fierce J.Lo, wearing a leopard-print A.L.C. outfit and her trademark thigh-highs.

Heading to the Daily Show, we got a peek of Fashion J.Lo in her asymmetric-zip leather overcoat, and by the end of the night she was in Jenny From the Block mode in a fur-trimmed plaid Michael Kors coat and chunky high-tops.

Between the coat swaps and the accompanying shoe, jewelry and clutch changes that went with, we have to say we’re more impressed with Lopez’s luggage handler than Lopez herself — but we have to give her props for looking equally fab in every ensemble. Tell us: Which Lopez look is your favorite?

Why Is Jennifer Lopez Wearing a Wedding Dress?

Should Casper Smart start scheduling tux fittings? Though girlfriend Jennifer Lopez swears she’s taking things slow, let’s examine the evidence: she’s rocked a huge ring on that finger, they’re publicly discussing the future — and oh yeah, she’s wearing an actual wedding dress.

Sandwiched between her white gown at the Golden Globes and her white gown at the Las Vegas Parker premiere, the superstar hit the red carpet for Parker in N.Y.C. wearing one of the wedding dresses from the Lanvin Blanche bridal collection, to which she added pristine white Lanvin pumps and delicate, sparkling Demarco jewels. (Thanks to Tom + Lorenzo for first pointing it out.)

Available on Lanvin’s website for $4,190, the dress is perfect for a sexy, curvaceous bride’s low-key wedding ceremony — say, perhaps, a very famous superstar’s fourth marriage to a much-younger beau? She may be denying a trip down the aisle at the moment, but all we’re saying is that she should keep this whole look in the back of her closet, just in case. Tabatha’s Takeover: Jennifer Lopez’s Latest Look Is a Head-Scratcher

We all know Tabatha Coffey, Bravo’s sharp-tongued Aussie style pro, from her stint on Shear Genius and her latest hit, Tabatha Takes Over. And now, she’s bringing her talents online, joining us at PEOPLE StyleWatch once weekly to dish on some of the best – and worst – celebrity looks of the week. Keep in mind the opinions below belong solely to the stylist … though she’s probably saying what lots of you are thinking, anyway!

Today, she takes on Jennifer Lopez, who took a risk in a Vivienne Westwood jumpsuit for a Verizon event in Beverly Hills last week:

I have to admit it, I’m stumped this time.

I honestly am not too sure how I feel about this overall look for Jennifer Lopez. Half of me wants to love it, but the other half of me wants to scream and throw a robe on her! Maybe it’s because I love me some Vivienne Westwood every now and then. But there is just something a bit off about this. Could it be the low-hung crotch that reminds me of her In Living Color Fly Girl days? Maybe the too-tapered ankles? Forget it, I’m stumped. Honestly, I could take it or leave it.

As far as her hair goes, I will say that I’m really getting tired of the whole ombré look, but it really works well on her. Maybe it’s because Jennifer has such a lovely complexion and skin tone. There are now only three celebrities in my opinion who are entitled to keep this ombré look going and J. Lo is one of them.

And speaking of complexion, she looks absolutely radiant in this photo. Brilliant makeup application. Very natural and fresh.

Jennifer Lopez’s Stylists Call Her ‘Bronx Barbie’

Jennifer Lopez hasn’t rocked a bedazzled bandana in quite some time, but that doesn’t mean she’s abandoned her “Jenny from the Block” look altogether. Just ask her stylists, Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn, who still see some Fly Girl in the fashion plate.

“We call her Bronx Barbie!” Zangardi and Haenn tell PEOPLE. “Jen’s style is consistently bold and feminine yet timeless and sophisticated, with little influences of N.Y.C. street style,” hence the moniker.

Along with revealing Lopez’s nickname (which we plan to use from now on), the duo also explain why J.Lo’s been wearing so much white lately — and it has nothing to do with a wedding anytime soon. “Because her coloring is so honey-toned, neutrals tend to make her really shine,” Zangardi and Haenn say.

Something else the star wears often? Pieces by designer Zuhair Murad. “Zuhair has the amazing taste level for glamour but with subtle undertones of edge,” they explain. “And considering that [Jennifer] is not only a movie star but a musician and performer, it’s important that we find designers that can create clothes that deliver a statement in both worlds.”

We won’t be surprised if Lopez chooses yet another Zuhair Murad creation for the Grammy Awards on Sunday, but Zangardi and Haenn aren’t giving up that information yet — and not because they want to keep it a secret. “We are still in the process of prepping, but we usually narrow things down to our top three looks, and we won’t know until 10 minutes before she walks out the door.”

Watch the above video to hear even more Lopez — we mean, Bronx Barbie — style scoop from Zangardi and Haenn and find out about Lopez’s newest fragrance, Forever Glowing, available exclusively at Kohl’s. Tell us: What do you hope Lopez wears to the Grammys on Sunday?

The Grammys Beauty Breakdown: Nail Art Edition

The dresses may have been rather safe at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, but some stars went bold with at least one part of their look: their nails. Celebs from Carly Rae Jepsen (rocking diamond-dusted nails) to Kelly Clarkson (in a yet-to-be-named Deborah Lippman shade) sported killer polish, but we narrowed it down to four stars whose manis really stood out.

Grammy Nails Rihanna, Miranda LambertWireImage; Inset: Getty; WireImage; Inset: Getty

Rihanna: She went for a modest gown, but the singer brought her signature sexiness with ’80-inspired square-shape crazy-long talons. “She wanted to match her dress perfectly with an orange-red color, so we blended two colors to come up with the perfect look,” her manicurist Kimmie Kyees tells PEOPLE. (She used a mix of Ooo La Liscious and Red Carpet Reddy by Red Carpet Manicure LED gel polish.)

Miranda Lambert: Adding a pop of blue with mini triangles on the base of her nail beds, Lambert added a funky twist to her ladylike rounded champagne numbers. (Her manicurist, Naja Rickette, used colors from the Azature Black Diamond Collection, including blue and champagne.)

Grammy Nails Jennifer Lopez, Carrie Underwood WireImage (2); WireImage; Inset: Landov

Jennifer Lopez: Lopez’s barley there lacquer is fitting considering her outfit showed, um, a lot of skin. She finished off her almond-shaped daggers with strips of gold — a deceptively simple look she told Ryan Seacrest required at least four steps.

Carrie Underwood: The country star spiced up her classic, short and square ruby mani by painting her ring finger a bronze shade on each hand.

Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop On Navy, Lady Suits & Disco Ball Dresses

$

Emmy Rossum, Jessica Alba, Jennifer LopezDave Allocca/Startraks; Amanda Edwards/WireImage; Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic

Judging by the red carpet looks seen at the Grammys and the creations sent down the runways at New York Fashion Week, we have a sneaking suspicion we’ll be spotting a lot more navy and a lot more menswear-inspired getups in the coming weeks. But there’s one style you can pretty much write off (and don’t expect to see much of it at the Oscars): Studio 54-esque dresses.

Up: Navy Instead of Black. The LBD and LWD better watch out: There’s another shade gunning for the spotlight. This week everyone from Emmy Rossum and Anne Hathaway to Oprah Winfrey and Miranda Lambert slipped into midnight blue. And we totally understand the appeal of the color. It’s a bit more interesting and unexpected than black, but equally flattering on all shapes and sizes.

Up: Menswear-Inspired Looks. Beyoncé wore a pantsuit to the Grammys and a number of other stars (including Jessica Alba, Julianne Hough and Solange Knowles) quickly followed, well, suit. We doubt that tons of actresses will forgo gowns for dude duds at the Oscars, but our money is on at least one woman in menswear on that red carpet.

Down: Disco Ball Dresses. They had their moment, but that moment seems to have passed. So, take a long look at Jennifer Lopez in her printed sequin Preen dress (sparkly enough to be hung from the ceiling over any dance floor) because as amazing as it is, the creation is probably the last you’ll see of its kind for some time.
